A Perfect Day on the Mornington Peninsula (And Where to End It)

A Wildgrain Blog Post

There's a particular kind of day that the Mornington Peninsula does better than almost anywhere else in Victoria. It starts with a coffee in hand and salt in the air, wanders through vineyards and rock pools and clifftop lookouts, and ends — if you've planned it properly — at a table, with a glass of something good and nowhere else to be.

We're lucky enough to call this stretch of coast home, and after years of watching guests roll in relaxed and unhurried after a big day out, we've more or less mapped the perfect version of it. So if you're driving down from Melbourne, staying somewhere nearby, or simply giving yourself a day off, here's how we'd spend it.

Morning: Coffee Done Properly

Skip the early alarm if you can. The Peninsula rewards a relaxed start far more than a rushed one. Begin in Mornington itself — wander along the pier, follow the Bay Trail for a stretch, and let the morning light do its thing over Port Phillip Bay.

Then make your way to Via Battista in Mount Martha, just across the road from the beach. It's a little piece of the Mediterranean dropped into a postcard-perfect village setting — excellent coffee, a panini bar that's genuinely worth the trip on its own, and the kind of warm, first-name-basis hospitality that makes you want to linger longer than you planned. Take it slow. You're not in a hurry today.

Mid-Morning: Stock Up at the Farm Gate

From Mount Martha, head toward Torello Farm in Dromana — part working market garden, part farmers' market/shop, and one of the best ways to understand just how much good produce this region quietly grows. Wander the farm gate shop for heirloom vegetables, tree-ripened fruit, organically grown leaves, sourdough, preserves, and their own grass-fed beef and lamb. Even if you're not stocking up for the week ahead, it's worth the visit just to see where so much of the Peninsula's good food actually starts. The Wildgrain farm is based here and run by Sean. He farms the produce for the restaurant and also sells many items at the farmgate shop and every item he grows is organically grown. Everything in this shop is truly local. This is also a nice, easy stretch of the day — no bookings, no rush, just good produce and good conversation with the people who grow it. If your lucky you could run into one of these talented farmers on your visit. Say 'hi' to Ali, Sean, Mark or Sophie

Midday: Wine Country

No Peninsula day is complete without a detour into the hills around Red Hill and Dromana, where the region's cool-climate wineries are doing some of the best pinot noir and chardonnay in the country. Crittenden Estate is a lovely one to anchor your visit around — one of the Peninsula's original family-owned wineries, set at the base of Red Hill with a cellar door looking out over its own vineyard lake. Settle in for a seated tasting, take in the view, and let the afternoon slow right down.

If lunch is on your mind, the restaurant is a beautiful one, and if the weather is good they have a relaxed terrace for a bite to eat and a glass of wine.

Afternoon: Coast, Sand, or Stillness

This is where your day splits into choose-your-own-adventure territory, depending on what you're after.

For the beach lovers: Head toward Sorrento or Portsea, where the back beaches deliver dramatic, rugged coastline and proper rock pools to explore. Sorrento Back Beach is a favourite for a reason. If you'd rather something calmer and more family-friendly, Mount Martha Beach and its colourful bathing boxes are hard to beat.

For the walkers: Point Nepean National Park and the clifftops around Cape Schanck offer some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in the state — wild, windswept, and well worth the walk to the lighthouse lookout.

For a winter detour (June–August only): Head inland to Flinders Truffles, where the Groves family's lagotto dogs, Lucy and Enzo, will help you track down black winter truffles hidden beneath 1,150 French oak trees. Join a guided hunt if the timing works, or simply swing by the farm gate for one of their famous truffle and cheese toasties by the fire. It's a proper Peninsula-in-winter experience, and one that disappears again come spring.

For the ones who just want to switch off: Peninsula Hot Springs is exactly the kind of slow, steamy afternoon reset that pairs beautifully with a big day of driving and walking. Bath-hop your way through the thermal pools and let the rest of your itinerary wait.

There's no wrong answer here. The Peninsula was built for whichever pace you're in the mood for.

Evening: This Is Where We Come In

By the time the light starts to soften and that particular golden-hour glow settles over the bay, you've earned a proper sit-down. This is the part of the day we care about most — not because it's ours to host, but because we know exactly how good it feels to finally put your feet up after a day spent moving through wineries, walking tracks, and salt air.

At Wildgrain, evenings are built for exactly this kind of unwinding. Whether you're after Chef Leo's 'Feed Me' menu ( it's a surprise menu of the kitchens favourites) or our regular menu, a glass of something from our local wine list, or you've timed your visit around one of our seasonal nights, our doors are open and the table's ready. No rushing, no fuss — just good food, good wine, and a comfortable place to land after a full day on the Peninsula.

It's the kind of ending that makes you want to come back and do the whole day again.

A Day Worth Repeating

Part of what makes the Mornington Peninsula special is that no two days here look quite the same. Swap the farm gate for a market, the hot springs for a surf, the truffle hunt for another vineyard altogether — the bones of a great day are flexible, but the formula holds: start slow, move through something beautiful, and finish somewhere that feels like a proper reward.

We'll have the table waiting.
